Stratton James - “Silence in the Walls”

Atlanta up-and-comer Stratton James has come out swinging with his newest single, “Silence in the Walls.” It’s no secret that Stratton James has a fondness for the past, but his old school writing and instrumentation lulls listeners into a sense of nostalgia that only has them looking forward to what’s next for him. Inspired by great songwriters from David Gray to Van Morrison, Stratton perfectly blends classic singer-songwriter style with fresh sounds and impeccable feel.

Stratton released his first single, “Tattoo,” last year, but has definitively come into his own with his latest record project. From the first note played on his Fender Stratocaster, Stratton James gives you no choice but to listen. The timeless sound and progression pairs perfectly with undeniable groove by Stratton and his studio dream team. It’s clear upon the first impression, but only becomes more obvious with each subsequent listen that no detail was ignored in the production of “Silence in the Walls.” The lyrics tell a familiar imperfect  love story surrounding equally imperfect lovers, a songwriting vibe that feels tailor-made for Stratton’s musical style. The titular metaphor reminds the listener of the deafening silence that sticks to you like summer night humidity when the one you love is nowhere to be found. Love should come with a warning…

Stratton’s lyricism is only part of the story, however, as the chord progression and instrumental performances tie together what was already a great song. James worked with producer Steven Morrison to fill in the space on the record with tasteful yet surprising nuggets. Guitar overdubs steeped in the sound of John Mayer keep your ears engaged with every phrase without an ounce of clutter. Keyboardist Clay Duke adds in perfectly flavored Richard Dunn-esque colors to help bring the tune to life. Not to mention a groove that doesn’t sleep laid down by Stratton James Trio members Nico Lembo and David Schroeder (on drums and bass respectively). Long story short, “Silence in the Walls” is an early entry into a blooming discography that points emphatically to a bright future.

You can catch Stratton James playing all around Georgia solo or with the Stratton James Trio, as well as in the upcoming Classic City Sounds festival with local supergroup Duper’s Delight.
