Raya Ackleh - “3ARABIYE”

“3ARABIYE,” the second career single from Arab-American pop singer Raya Ackleh, is out now and gives you no choice but to tune in. This energetic 3-minute listen features some of the most unique lyrical style you’ll hear in Athens (or anywhere for that matter), with lyrics in both Arabic and English. That fact itself is remarkable, but acts as no gimmick or crutch. Rather, it serves as an embodiment of Ackleh’s countless inspirations and stylistic influences. The song pulls the listener back and forth between Arabic and English, perhaps evoking Ackleh’s feelings of balancing such different cultural backgrounds. However, the finished product sounds like an artist who has discovered the power that exists in the combination of cultures rather than the separation of them. “3ARABIYE” is a perfect example of that combination, and a musical celebration of it.

The single was produced by Athens & Atlanta-based hip-hop producer Evan Smallwood. The collaboration between Raya and Evan is yet another instance of diversified musical backgrounds yielding a unique and captivating result. You can really hear the rap experience behind the beat and all-around production value of the track, and when paired with Ackleh’s vocal performance and at times enigmatic lyrics it paints a one-of-a-kind picture. Born in UGA’s Music Business program, this collaboration has what it takes to tackle a project like “3ARABIYE.”

Ackleh released her first song in January, and at just 20 years of age she is making a great impression with this newest single. It’s exciting to watch Raya Ackleh’s career get off the ground, and CTRC can’t wait to see what she has in store for Athens!
